"The historic port city of Valparaíso, Chile"
The aim of this meeting is to investigate in the following question:
Is the expansion of the port compatible with a hyper-technological, effective and efficient port, and along with this, the rehabilitation of its adjacent historical centre?
This seminar will promote debate around the process of obsolescence that cross the historical neighborhoods of port cities, deepening two topics of growing interest in contemporary urbanism: on the one hand, the rehabilitation of historical centers, and on the other, the reconfiguration of its maritime front. The historic quarter of the port city of
Valparaíso suffers a progressive deterioration, caused mainly by the functional isolation between the port and the city.
This disconnection shows the incompatibility between logistics activities and urban uses, which has led to the exhaustion of its urban and socio-economic structure. In this day, various experiences will be presented that will address the urban, heritage, regulatory, logistics and management dimensions.
It will reflect on ideas that can contribute to the generation of a general plan that bets on the revitalization of urban and sociocultural fabrics, analyzing the need for port expansion and how it is related to the revitalization of its historical area.
We invite all those researches that have addressed this topic to participate, especially those focused on the case of Valparaíso, whose critical reflections and contributions can enrich the debate.
